Marlin and I worked at a small company in Sun Valley called Barodyne. We made prototype air compressors. He was in his early twenties but was running the shop. He was such a smart guy. I knew he was destined for bigger and better things. We reconnected through Facebook after more than 40 years. We talked about what we’ve been doing and found out we had a lot in common. Like fishing, hunting, and traveling the world. My condolences to the family.

Marlin was an incredible mentor and friend to me. Initially our friendship started with Marlin taking great joy in provoking me with outrageous statements, but as time went by I came to cherish our many conversations about engineering, his career, the outdoors (especially the eastern sierras and kernville), parenthood, woodworking, the environment and life in general. I will always miss his practical advice and positive outlook. Marlin and Joyce also gave us the chance to housesit for them whilst they were in Florida, which in turn allowed us to finally pull together a deposit for our own home in California. Ross and I are forever grateful to them for that opportunity. Thank you Marlin for enriching my life, I will always miss you my friend.

Altho I didn't meet Marlin in person, I really had a lot of respect and like for him. He was my husband's cousin and reached out to me via Facebook and I like to think we became friends. How can I possibly describe my experiences and adventures with Marlin? He was quite simply the most complex person I have ever known. Just when you think you have him defined, he would show you new facets. Engineer, artisan, artist, and mentor. He was very proud to have mentored some of our “kids” at JPL, but he also mentored many of us oldsters, too. He was a friend, a teacher, and an “asshole buddy” across decades and continents. I’m so glad he was a part of my life!

Marlin had a great sense of humor. After a great family meal at Marlin & Joyce’s house, when Nick and Glenn & my son Mark we’re young, Marlin stated how he was really looking forward to the great dessert of Key Lime pie. We all responded enthusiastically “yes, would be great!” Without skipping a beat he asked if anyone had brought the pie. We looked at each other and realized no. How disappointing that was. We often retell that story and laugh. Marlin, you will forever be in our hearts. With love and appreciation for what you gave to us all. Kathy

I was fortunate to meet Marlin when I started work at The Marquardt Company in 1989. Right away he became a mentor figure teaching me the ins and outs of testing the hardware. Later on, we would compare times to see who could build a Shuttle RCS engine faster. When Marquardt moved up to Redmond, Washington, it was Marlin who opened the doors for me at JPL and recommended me to the Propulsion group. His mentorship would continue there, helping me become a better technician. During our time at JPL, we worked together in several campaigns including three long term deployments to KSC, twice to Brazil and also to Argentina. I will forever be grateful for his guidance, friendship and I will miss him dearly.

My name is Augie Lopez. Marlin was a good friend of mine when we were in our teens and had alot in common. Especially our love of the outdoors. I have great memories of our fishing trips to the High Sierras and hiking the John Muir Trail. I have shared a photo of us while we were on the John Muir Trail. May you rest in peace my friend.

I first met Marlin (and Joyce) at Marquardt during the "Space Shuttle era". All of us at Marquardt were like a family both during work and at the many parties and social events. Marlin was a great pleasure to work with and we kept in touch ever after he immigrated to JPL. His accomplishments at JPL contributed to the many successful planetary missions and should not ever be forgotten. .
