Sandra Anne Rubin Deis, 84, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2023, in Oak Park, California.
Sandy was born October 21, 1938 in Buffalo, New York, to Hermenia and Louis H. Coll. She graduated from Kensington High School, then completed the program to become a Registered Nurse at the Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing. After obtaining her RN license, Sandy moved to New York City, working in a hospital's neurosurgery unit, assisting with brain surgeries. She later moved to Vermont, where she managed and co-owned a ski lodge.
In 1969, she moved to the Los Angeles area, where she spent the rest of her life. There, she raised 3 sons: Stuart, Danny and David Rubin.
In 1982, she met Paul Deis, and they married in Palos Verdes, California, in 1984, moving to Oak Park in 1985. She then worked at a number of jobs in the health care industry, with her favorite being as a school nurse with the Los Angeles Unified School District. In 1990 she obtained a bachelor's degree in Health Science at California State University, Northridge (Los Angeles). She also served her spiritual community in many roles, first with Makom Ohr Shalom, then as a Licensed Practitioner (providing spiritual counseling services) at the Westlake Church of Religious Science. At Calvary, she served on the Bereavement Team, and often served in other volunteer roles. Sandy also volunteered at the Cancer Support Community for 8 years.
Sandy peacefully transitioned at her home of 37 years, following a 3 year battle with cancer, in the presence of her husband Paul Deis, son David Rubin, his wife Cara Martin Rubin, her daughter-in-law Mette Rubin (Stuart), and Stepdaughter Debbie Peterson (Rubin). She is also survived by her grandchildren Jakob and Anna Rubin, and her sister Karen Mertz. Sandy served in the role of loving wife, a friend, honorary “mom” and “Nana” to many others and will be deeply missed.
There will be a service celebrating her remarkable life at Calvary Community Church, Westlake Village, on November 11, 2023, at 11 AM.
