Obituary of Edith Joan Hernandez

Edith Hernandez was a loving and caring mother, grandmother (Nana), and great grandmother. She left us on November 6, 2021 in Simi Valley California.

Edith was born May 4,1946 to Josephine Melendez Gomez and Ernesto Rodriguez Cabrera, in Van Nuys, California and was one of 16 children. She was raised by Loy and William (Memo) Vasquez from a very young age. She is predeceased by her parents, Josephine and Ernesto, and three sisters, Lucy, Theresa, and Rebecca. She settled down in Simi Valley, CA in 2005 and spent the rest of her life there, where she was close to her family.

She is survived by her two sons, Xavier and Kurt, eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and numerous brothers and sisters.

Edith worked as a travel agent, manicurist, and nanny for several families in Ventura and Simi Valley. She became a part of their lives and families. She treasured her relationships with the children she cared for. Their pictures and mementos decorated her home.

Edith loved her family. She moved back to Simi Valley in 2005 to be closer to her family and grandchildren. Her hobbies included shopping, watching sports, and volunteering. For many years she volunteered at the Ventura County Fair, where she always enjoyed putting together the children’s art exhibitions. She was an active member of her community, and could frequently be seen walking, shopping, and thrifting with her friends. She also enjoyed giving gifts, and was a frequent Avon shopper. She loved to pick out gifts for her friends and family. She was incredibly organized, her checkbook was always balanced twice, every piece of mail saved and labeled with a date, and every greeting card she ever received, lovingly dated and kept safe. Edith never forgot a birthday, anniversary, or anyone’s favorite sports teams.

She loved Betty Boop, amassing a huge collection of memorabilia over the years. Her family will always remember her love for hand held Poker and Solitaire games, she would always have one with her. Edith also enjoyed completing word puzzles, dancing and listening to music. Some of her favorite artists were Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Al Greene, and other “oldies”.  Edith enjoyed reading, especially the Bible. She loved to watch mystery shows and whodunnits. Some of her favorites were Monk, Bones, and Murder She Wrote. She also had a huge love of the Hallmark Channel. She never missed an episode of Little House on the Prairie, The Waltons, and all of the original Hallmark movies which she always saw more than once. Her favorite sports were football and baseball, and she was a huge Giants and Green Bay Packers fan.

Edith passed surrounded by her family. She was a loving mom, nana, great grandmother, sister, aunt, niece, nina, cousin, and friend  who will be greatly missed, and she leaves behind many warm memories that we will cherish."
