Obituary of Donald Steven Meyer

Donald Steven Meyer, a man of wisdom and grace, passed away peacefully at home on April 28, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him. Born on April 14, 1942, in Orange, California to Elmer and Luella Meyer, Don's life was a testament to the power of joy, adventure, and unwavering faith.

Don's early years were marked by happiness and surrounded by love in the company of his siblings, Paul and Annette. His parents, Elmer, a funeral director, and Luella, a maternity nurse, instilled in him values of compassion and perseverance that shaped his remarkable journey.

Despite facing adversity at a young age, Don's infectious spirit never waned. Contracting polio at the tender age of four could have dampened his enthusiasm, but instead, it ignited a flame of determination within him to embrace life to its fullest. Throughout his journey, Don radiated boundless joy, touching the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

From his early days as a Boy Scout to his lifelong love affair with the beach, Don's sense of adventure knew no bounds. He cherished the salty breeze and crashing waves, spending countless hours in his youth body surfing, boogie boarding, and surfing along the California coast. His fondest memories were woven with the threads of beachside escapades, whether at the family beach house in Sea Cliff Beach or during idyllic vacations in California, the Caribbean, and Hawaii.  These moments shared with cherished friends and family became treasured chapters in the story of his life.

Don's academic journey led him to Pacific Lutheran University for one year before he returned to his roots at California Lutheran University (then College), where he proudly graduated as a member of its inaugural class in 1964. It was during his time at CLU that he crossed paths with Sandra (Sandi) Pierce once again after meeting her as a camp counselor at a bible camp when he was 15.  This was the beginning of a love story that spanned over five decades. Their wedding on December 10, 1966, marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership filled with unwavering devotion and endless love.

As a father, Don embodied warmth, compassion, and boundless love. Whether he was whipping up his famous walnut waffles, cheering on his daughters Jennifer and Natalie, or regaling them with tales of whimsical adventures, his presence illuminated their lives with joy and laughter. He reveled in the simple pleasures of family time, from cozy evenings by the fireplace to road trips across the country, singing out loud the timeless tunes of John Denver and the Kingston Trio.

Donald's love for travel knew no bounds, especially when shared with his wife, Sandi. Together, they embarked on countless adventures, exploring the rich tapestry of history and culture across the globe. From tracing the footsteps of soldiers on Civil War battlefields in the United States to traversing the cobblestone streets of Europe's ancient cities, every journey was a testament to their shared passion for discovery. 

Don's professional career with Lutheran Brotherhood and Thrivent spanned an impressive 55 years, earning him a place of honor in the Hall of Fame at Thrivent Financial. His dedication to serving others with integrity and compassion left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of working alongside him.

Deeply rooted in his Christian faith, Don found solace and strength in his Lutheran beliefs. He found fellowship and spiritual nourishment in the congregations of Central Lutheran Church, Holy Shepherd Lutheran, First Lutheran Northridge, and most recently, Ascension Lutheran Church, where we are celebrating his life.

Among his greatest treasures were his five grandchildren, Makenna, Rachel, Soren, Reid, and Mason, whom he adored and celebrated at every opportunity, overflowing with pride at their every accomplishment.

With a twinkle in his eye and a heart full of laughter, Don embraced each day with unwavering positivity and grace. His legacy of joy, humor, and wisdom will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he may have bid farewell to this earthly realm, his spirit will forever live on in the cherished memories of those who loved him dearly.
